As much as we love the excitement of traveling to a new destination, the unexpected detours and unplanned adventures make a trip memorable. That’s why Tracy and I believe in taking side trips while traveling. These little excursions on America’s scenic highways add spontaneity to the journey and allow you to uncover hidden gems and experience a destination in a unique way.
Taking side trips allows us to dive deeper into the local culture and experience a place like a true insider. Imagine exploring local markets, chatting with friendly locals, and sampling local cuisine. These experiences give us a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who call the destination home. From discovering hidden cafes to stumbling upon vibrant street art, taking the time to explore beyond the tourist spots opens our eyes to a whole new world of local life. So next time you travel, make it a point to experience more than just the tourist spots and immerse yourself in the local culture for a truly memorable journey.

Are you ready to embark on some exciting side trips? Here are five destinations that you should consider exploring during your travels.
The Mother Road: Route 66
Known as the “Main Street of America” or “The Mother Road,” this historic route runs from Chicago to Santa Monica, California, passing through a variety of landscapes and offering a glimpse into classic Americana.
Tracy and I had a recent trip to St Louis. We had some extra time, so we decided to make a side trip to Atlanta, IL. Little unknown fact, I’m a Route 66 junkie. I love the history of Route 66. The iconic landmarks such as the Mufflermen, the Wigwam motels, the Cadillac Ranch, and other roadside attractions can never be replaced. Those days were Americana at its best.
Scenic Highways: California’s Pacific Coast Highway
Highway 1 runs along most of the California coastline, offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, towering cliffs, and charming coastal towns. Highlights include Big Sur, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Monterey Peninsula.
Another of My Favorite Highways is US 1 down the Florida Keys.
A trip down the Overseas Highway, which stretches over 100 miles over the ocean and through the Florida Keys, is a must-do. Don’t forget the convertible!!
Scenic Highways: The Maine Coast
A drive along Route 1 in Maine offers charming coastal towns, lighthouses, and stunning ocean views.
Scenic Highways: The Mississippi River
Follow the Great River Road, which runs alongside the Mississippi River from Minnesota to Louisiana, for a unique and scenic journey.
